‘Free’ electricity in the wild

I get excited and then I take a picture! Here are the highlights from the past few weeks.

On the Shinkansen

On the Hikari, we saw these outlets close to the feet area. Only available to passengers on the window seat.

At the airport

This charging station was at Hong Kong Airport. It might be the first one I’ve seen that wasn’t sponsored by a telecom company (not that there’s anything wrong with that)!

There was also a nifty structure that had 2-3 dozen little plastic lockers that each had different types of plugs for mobile devices. Forgot to take a pic 🙁

On a plane

In the future, they will do away with little screens and just provide a socket so that passengers can use their own laptops and tablets!

All of them turned out to be transportation-related. That makes sense but it’s also interesting to imagine where else the service could be provided in urban environments where we carry around multiple devices that require charging.

Softbank started offering free charging in their shops in 2010. This is great in theory but I’ve never managed to find one or remembered to look when I needed it… how about you?
